A Fine Black Sky

CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

Kid had not intended to, but within his adventurous wanderings, he would often find himself in a part of the South Tower, where he was ensconced within the shrouding and broodingly material of the cloak of darkness, cornered where the walls closed in, warmly, in a chilling embrace.  It was a comfort often found amongst the lonely, that any kind of enclosing contact would feel parental, with the false confidence of invisibility to a world out of phase with the individual - on some other plane of existence, yet observable through the haze of a strong dark veil.
In Kid’s secret world, he would observe many wandering, but it was the activities of Osseus Rivalis that particularly drew his attention.  It was true - Osseus was becoming more like the Bending Noble, Reptutis.  His bullying had taken on a singularly criminal motive, where the provision of coin and object had taken over from the once emotional cruelty.  If it could be said without recourse, one might observe that, in some strange way, Osseus had matured in his cruelty, as he took from all - rich and poor.  The rich could afford it.  The poor could not.  And Kid had seen enough.  He broke from his covering.
“He would be proud, Osseus.” came Kid’s calm voice.
“Who?  Who would be proud?  What are you muttering about, scum?” asked Osseus, reeling on his taunter.
“The Bending Noble, Reptutis.” explained Kid, well knowing the impact the name would have.
Osseus leaned into Kid’s personal space, “It is dangerous to bring up a name like that around a South Tower Noble, scum.” breathed Osseus.
Kid was stoic, “It is no less than you deserve.  You are like him, in so many ways.”
“Take that back!  Boys?  Make him take that back.” said Osseus, turning to his cronies.
Kid looked upon the two Brothers, halted before they had manoeuvred, “And you, Adelpher?  And you, Aramod?  Has not the Cresser Family name suffered enough, without bending at the knee to Osseus’s order?  I’m sorry, I can stand aside no longer.”
In a rare moment, one of the Brothers spoke, “It is not our place to question -“
“You see how he has you indoctrinated?  No, Osseus!  I can’t take it any more!”
“I -“ began Osseus.
Kid brushed past him, “I must go now.  The bell has sounded for the next Class.” expressed Kid, suddenly a little proud of himself.
